Barry Manilow est un compositeur, chanteur, acteur, présentateur et producteur américain né le 17 juin 1943 à New York, (États-Unis).

Celui qui est surnommé "le parrain de Las Vegas" aurait vendu près de 300 millions de disques à travers le monde, Barry Manilow est une des plus grandes figures artistiques du xxe siècle. Homme de scène multi-récompensé, comme encore son dernier spectacle à Las Vegas, meilleur spectacle de variété aux Emmy Awards 2006. En 1978, 5 de ses albums furent au top des ventes simultanément, un record égalé seulement par Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra et Johnny Mathis. En 1988, Bob Dylan ira même jusqu'à le citer comme la source d'inspiration de tout artiste.. Grâce à des hits comme Mandy, Weekend in New-England ou encore In search of love, Barry Manilow s'est imposé comme une véritable icône de la musique pop-rock/soft rock aux États-Unis. Michael Jackson le présentait comme son père spirituel. En 1996, Il fut nommé premier ambassadeur américain en Angleterre par le prince Charles. Un titre dû au culte lui étant voué en Grande-Bretagne.

Le « showman multi-génération » ou encore « un géant parmi les grands » (comme le nomme Rolling Stones) chante à guichets fermés dans chacun des stades où il passe. À peine annonce-t-il sa venue que les fans se ruent littéralement sur les locations. Certains fans n’hésitent pas à parcourir des milliers de kilomètres pour venir témoigner à leur idole un soutien inconditionnel. En 2006, 2 de ses albums furent classés numéros 1 et 2 consécutifs, un record encore inégalé.

Il est le compositeur en 1973 de la chanson Could It Be Magic, et ce fut l'interprétation de Donna Summer en 1975 qui fit de ce titre un tube international.
Repris en français par Alain Chamfort, il devient Le Temps qui court, qui est en 2007 l'hymne des Enfoirés. Après Copacabana (At the Copa), en 1978, Barry Manilow fit une interprétation du titre Memory en 1982 et qui fut la version la mieux classée dans les charts américains de cette chanson maintes fois reprise. Il fut invité au mariage du prince Charles et de Lady Di ainsi qu'à l'inauguration de la coupe du monde de football en 1994 aux États-Unis.En 2009 il donna un concert diffusé sur la BBC à Hyde Park à Londres réunissant plusieurs centaines de milliers de fans dans la capitale Anglaise comme l'avait fait le groupe de rock Queen auparavant.[4] Il lança la carrière deBette Midler et influença celle de Whitney Houston. En 1986, il fit une apparition au Palais des Congrès de Paris diffusé sur la chaîne télévisée française TF1 pour la promotion de son album Manilow mais il n'obtiendra pas le succès attendu en France. Il fut pendant longtemps un ami très proche de Michael Jackson, il lui rendit un dernier hommage ainsi qu'à sa famille après l'annonce de son décès lors d'un concert à Rochester. Barry Manilow est l'artiste le plus demandé à la télévision américaine (d'après Oprah Winfrey).
