Robert Brookmeyer rejoint le Gerry Mulligan's quartet en 1954. A la fin des années 50, il part pour New-York, où il devient musicien de studio et arrangeur. Parallèlement, il joue dans le quintet de Clark Terry. Après un court séjour en Europe, il rejoint Boston pour devenir professeur au New England Conservatory of Music.
