Art Blakey joue dans les orchestres de Mary Lou Williams, Fletcher Henderson, et Billy Eckstine dans les années 40. Dès 1950 Art Blakey participe aux groupes de Miles Davis, Bud Powell et Thelonious Monk. Puis il dirige avec Horace Silver une série de groupes sous divers noms. En 1954, le nom "The Jazz Messengers" est employé pour la première fois pour désigner le quintet, composé de Blakey, Silver, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham et Doug Watkins.. Silver quitte le quintet en 1956, le groupe devient donc « Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger » L'orchestre traversera de nombreux changements de line-up, avec Wayne Shorter au saxophone tenor, puis le tromboniste Curtis Fuller. D’autres musiciens ont marqués les Jazz Messengers, : Bobby Timmons et Benny Golson.
Art Blakey modifia sans cesse le line-up des Jazz Messengers pour intégrer de jeunes musiciens prometteurs comme Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison et Kenny Garrett.
