Aretha Franklin et ses sœurs, Carolyn et Erma chantaient à l'église de Détroit dans la chorale de leur père et ont fait leurs premiers enregistrements à l'âge de 14 ans. En 1960, Aretha signa avec Columbia Records et connu quelques petits succès, comme Rock-a-bye Your baby with a dixie melody, puis elle quitta Columbia pour rejoindre Atlantic en 1967 où elle enregistre des titres R&B parmi les plus influents des années 1960. A la fin des années 1960, Aretha Franklin devient une artiste internationalement connue et un symbole de fierté pour la communauté noire surnommée « The Queen of Soul ». Après des années 1970 moins glorieuses, elle rejoint Arista. Ses deux disques réalisés par Luther Vandross en 1982 Jump to it et 1983 Get it right obtiennent des n°1 R&B, celui de 1985 Who's zoomin' who est un immense succès ainsi que son duo de 1986 avec George Michael I knew you were waitin' for me. Elle revient sur le devant de la scène en 1998 avec A rose is still a rose, un album hip-hop, grand succès lui aussi.
Le 20 janvier 2009,Aretha Franklin fera chante lors de la cérémonie d’investiture du nouveau président des États-Unis d'Amérique Barack H. Obama.
